Does ginseng tea taste good?
Ginseng tea is well-known for its health benefits, but regarding taste, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Generally, ginseng tea has a unique and complex flavor with the dominance of bitterness. In contrast to American ginseng tea, which is bitter with a cooling feeling, Asian one has a bitter flavor with a warming hint.
Besides, ginseng tea also has earthy, sweet, and even spicy notes. It might be the bitterness that some people might find unpleasant and difficult to drink. Many people described their first tastes of trying ginseng tea as sharp and earthy, leaving them with a strong aftertaste. Therefore, people have found out how to make ginseng tea taste better by changing its brewing methods or adding other ingredients to enhance the flavor.

How to make ginseng tea taste better?
Following are several ways to improve ginseng tea’s flavor:
Adjusting brewing process
Although ginseng tea is naturally bitter, the way it is prepared has some effects on its bitterness. If you use fewer ginseng roots, the bitter levels can be lessened. Besides, a little change in the brewing time and temperature can dramatically influence the flavor of the tea. The longer you steep the ginseng roots, the more bitter the tea is. If you hope to reduce the bitterness, you can lower the water temperature for a milder tea drink.
Adding sweeteners
The natural sweetness of ginseng tea is quite subtle; therefore, you can add some kinds of sweeteners such as honey and sugar. The rising sweetness will help balance the bitterness, making it easier to drink. You should start with a small amount and increase or decrease based on your preferences.
Adding citrus fruits
Another way to balance the taste of ginseng tea is to add some citrus fruits like lemon or orange slices. A slice of lemon or orange can help lessen the bitterness of the tea and offer a more pleasant aroma. In addition, those fruits might bring a lively counterpoint to the earthy taste of ginseng tea.
Mixing with other teas, herbs, or fruits
Combined with other teas, such as green, black, or oolong tea, ginseng tea not only brings more potential health benefits but also enhances the taste. Besides true tea, you can also mix it with other fruits like jujubes or herbal teas to create a unique flavor and aroma. To get a more refreshing feeling, you can also add some sprigs of mint.

How to make ginseng tea taste better with honey and jujube?
Instead of steeping the ginseng root in hot water, another way is to marinate the ginseng in honey to reduce the bitterness and increase the sweetness. Let’s explore how to make ginseng tea taste better with honey and jujubes:
Ingredients
- 150 gr fresh ginseng
- 20 gr dried jujube
- 150gr honey
- A glass container
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the ginseng
Use a small brush to clean the ginseng roots. Wash it under running water to remove all the dirt. Then use kitchen paper to pat the ginseng. Ginseng must be thoroughly dried before storing to prevent mold growth.
Cut off and remove the top end. After that, cut the ginseng into thin slices.
Step 2: Prepare the jujubes
Similar to ginseng roots, wash the jujubes to clean off the debris. Dry them and then cut them into 0.3 to 0.5 cm thick pieces.
Step 3: Marinate the ginseng and jujubes in honey
Put the sliced ginseng and dried jujubes into a glass jar, add the honey and cover it. After one day of letting the mixture rest at room temperature, put it in the refrigerator. Within a week, it will be ready to enjoy.
Step 4: Make the ginseng tea
Take a few spoons of the marinated mixture to a cup, add warm water, and stir well. The ginseng tea is ready to drink. If you want to drink cold tea, just stir it with cold water or add some ice cubes.
