How does tea give you energy?

Having a cup of tea to start a day energetically or recharge the batteries in the mid-afternoon has become a habit of many people. Finding out the best teas for energy will offer a wonderful energy boost, together with a unique set of advantages not found in coffee, soda, or other sugar-added energy drinks. Have you ever wondered how teas give us energy?

Any kind of true tea made from the Camellia sinensis plants contains an amount of caffeine, a stimulant to help us stay focused. With the natural source of caffeine, those teas can help people stay away from sleepy and lethargic feelings. Besides, caffeine is also proven to enhance attention span, vigilance, and reaction time. Therefore, you might feel more alert and energized after drinking caffeinated beverages, improving your working or studying performance and productivity.

However, herbal tea is different from caffeinated teas, such as black and green teas. They are usually produced from flowers, herbs, spices, roots, and fruits. Generally, they are caffeine-free but still have other ways to boost energy. Other beneficial compounds and antioxidants in those drinks will help people alleviate stress, avoid highs and lows that can cause fatigue, and support sleep. As a result, the energy level will also be improved.

True teas

True teas are those made from the leaves and buds of Camellia sinensis plants, with a natural amount of caffeine. The caffeine properties in those teas bind with many beneficial antioxidants will provide stimulating and calming effects.

Black tea – Because of the fermentation process, it is one of the highest-caffeine teas, with about half as much caffeine as coffee. There are numerous varieties of black tea and diverse preparations. You can drink black tea unsweetened, or with milk and some sugar, which will not change the caffeine content.

Green tea As green tea does not go through fermentation, it contains less caffeine than black tea. Drinking green tea will gently provide energy to your body.

Oolong tea – Oolong tea is also another gentler choice for energy than black tea. As it is partly fermented, its caffeine content is between that of black and green tea.

Matcha – a fine powder made from green tea leaves. Matcha is usually made by mixing hot water and powder, consuming the whole tea leaf rather than the tea infusion. Therefore, matcha contains more caffeine than green tea and nearly as much as coffee.

Many herbal teas even though do not contain caffeine, they can still have stimulating effects. In some cases, people might mix herbal teas with black or green tea to elevate the energy boosting benefits.

Ginger tea – Even though ginger tea does not have caffeine properties, it can support digestion, and lower anxiety and inflammation. Besides, this spicy herb can enhance blood circulation and blood sugar levels. As a result, the energy levels will naturally rise.

Peppermint tea – By enhancing focus levels, easing pain, and strengthening the central nervous system, peppermint has been demonstrated to support cognitive and physical activities.

Chamomile tea – Low-energy status can result from lack of sleep or long-time anxiety. Chamomile is famous for alleviating stress and anxiety and improving sleep quality. If you are struggling with sleeping, chamomile tea is highly recommended.

Yerba mate

Yerba mate originated from South America, produced from a variety of the holly plant. Thanks to the caffeine content and rich sources of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, yerba mate has been favored for centuries. Recently, it has been a common ingredient in many energy drinks. The caffeine amount in yerba mate is usually higher than green tea, and lower than coffee, at about 78 mg every 8 ounces. Those who drink mate frequently say it has long-lasting stimulating effects without causing jitter or nausea, which might happen after overusing coffee.

Is coffee or tea better for energy?

You might probably have heard of coffee as an abundant source of caffeine, so is coffee or tea better for energy? The caffeine in coffee and tea can help you stay awake and boost your concentration and cognitive performance, but how they work is different. Although the caffeine content in these two categories might vary depending on the origins, varieties, and preparation, coffee generally contains a higher amount of caffeine than tea. If you are fond of caffeinated beverages, coffee might be a more favored choice.

However, tea leaves also contain an amino acid called L-theanine,  with a distinct calming effect. The L-theanine can work to promote both creativity and relaxation without sleepy effects. The harmonious pairing of stimulating and relaxing effects is the reason why the stimulating effects of tea are usually smoother and gentler, making it a better choice for those sensitive to caffeine. The slower and smoother effects of tea can reduce the side effects of caffeine on sleep quality, making it the major advantage of tea over coffee. Nevertheless, whether you choose coffee or tea, remember to limit the total amount of caffeine content, not to excess of 200 mg a day.
